The pathway
Roadbook
You start near the state road, on the northern outskirts of the beautiful village of Mara. The path immediately climbs steeply, winding through pastures bordered by dry stone walls. The volcanic landscape of the area captures the eye: to the left, you can admire the rounded crater of Monte Larenta, while the gentle hills surrounding the trail speak of a tumultuous geological history.
You reach the top of the climb and begin to descend gradually. On the left, you can see the sharp ridge on which stand the ruins of the Bonvehì Castle, abandoned after a bloody siege at the end of the Judicate era. The road reaches a clearly marked junction, where you turn right. In the direction of travel, the long ridge of Mount Traessu is visible, a regular destination for griffons and a treasure trove of biodiversity.
After another junction, the path continues uphill and soon reaches the church of Bonu Ighinu. This beautiful Baroque building is set in an extraordinary natural environment, in a panoramic position, and is surrounded by archaeological sites of great importance. Not far away are the caves that gave their name to an important Early Neolithic culture in Sardinia.
