The pathway
Roadbook
The route starts from S’Arcu Atzinnui along provincial road no. 10 towards Orroli, and by following the trail uphill, after 400 meters you reach the ancient Fossada spring.
Continuing, after another 200 meters you reach the San Giovanni Archaeological Park, located on a sandstone plateau of particular scenic value, which features:
- The ruins of the old Church of Saint John the Baptist, probably dating back to the late 1800s;
- The new Church of Saint John the Baptist, built in 1962 and restored in 1995;
- The hypogean necropolis consisting of 7 domus de janas, or small artificial caves carved into the rock, dating from the Neolithic period, from the 4th millennium BC to the early Bronze Age (beginning of the 2nd millennium BC);
- The Nuraghe of San Giovanni.
After about 2.8 km from the start, you reach the intersection at Genn’e Cracca and turn left towards San Salvatore.
From here, we follow a country road for approximately 700 meters and arrive at the old rural church of San Salvatore, dating back to the late 1700s and restored in 1997, where there is a panoramic resting and shelter spot.
After leaving the San Salvatore area, after 150 meters downhill, you reach the intersection and turn right onto the dirt path that leads to Riu Su Martutzu.
After covering another 2.9 km of dirt road, turn left, and from here begins a pleasant stretch of trail, slightly downhill, surrounded by Mediterranean scrub vegetation and occasionally bordered by old stone walls.
Along this final stretch of dirt trail, approximately 1 km long, the Riu Su Martutzu will be crossed several times until reaching the S.P. no. 23 towards Goni. The streambed is usually dry, but in case of rain, crossing it could be difficult.
