The pathway
Roadbook
You can start from the Terralai area (860 m above sea level) on a dirt track inside the Semida Forestry Garrison, which crosses a mixed forest area of conifers and Mediterranean species. This first section is about 4.6 km long, is all downhill, and has an average gradient of less than 10%.
The unpaved downhill section of the trail ends in Gertassu (445 meters above sea level), where there's an artificial lake. The trail then continues by fording the stream just above the dam, picking up the unpaved road again for a 2.9 km uphill climb towards S’Enna ‘e s’Orcu (725 meters above sea level), which is outside the forest perimeter.
Continuing on a paved road in a westerly direction, parallel to the boundary of the forestry station and crossing the Ulassai wind farm, after about 2.2 km you'll arrive at the Godditorgiu area (750 m a.s.l.), the entry point and starting point of trail 511A, which is for pedestrians only.
Keep heading west and you'll get back on the dirt road, which goes downhill at a grade of about 5%. After about 1.3 km, at the S'Ulimu site (707 meters above sea level), near the nuraghe of the same name, you'll connect with alternative trail 511A, which branches off from the Domos de Janas / Nuraghe Sedd'Orulu archaeological area.
If you continue for about another 400 meters in a southwest direction, you'll find a Giants' Tomb at Genn'e Pauli, which is adjacent to the path. There is also a turn-off for the monumental wild olive tree of Bruncu s'Ollastu, which is located 265 meters from the path in a southeast direction.
The trail continues along the dirt road, heading northwest and staying mostly downhill. The final 4 kilometers feature some gentle rolling hills as you traverse a beautiful natural cork oak forest filled with impressive trees. After about 7.9 km, the path turns northeast and you'll reach the end of trail 511 at the junction with trail 510 in the Laccara area (366 m a.s.l.). The final 2 kilometers of the route take you back into the Semida Forest Station.
