The pathway

The trail is part of the Limbara massif which straddles the territories of the municipalities of Tempio Pausania, Calangianus and Berchidda. To plan your excursion, it is best to divide this mountain area into North Limbara (which includes Tempio Pausania and Calangianus) and South Limbara (which falls mainly within the territory of Berchidda).

Specifically, trail 404 falls on the North Limbara side and starts from the locality of Fossu Lu Pisciaroni, which you will find after walking for just under 2 km on trail 401 (starting from Curaderuddu) to end in the Valliciola locality (1050 m asl, an area managed by the regional Agency Forestas). Oltu di Li Pomi is an intermediate stop point of this short but interesting route.

This trail was previously known as “route D of North Limbara” due to an old trail naming system that has now been replaced and updated, by installing the new signpost as per national standards, with the number “F-404” (trail 404 of the Sardinia Trail Network (RES) “F” area on the regional scale).

GETTING THERE

To get to the picnic area, which is the starting point of trail 401 from which trail 404 branches off, from Tempio Pausania take the SS 392 to Oschiri.

After crossing the Tempio Pausania - Palau railway line and passing the road junction for the industrial area on your left, continue along the SS 392 for about 2 km.

Useful informations

In 2022 and part of 2023, the Forestas Agency, in cooperation with the Sassari CAI, carried out checks and maintenance activities on the trail, including signposts and markers.

WARNING: The trail signs are being replaced.

ROUTE IS PENDING REGISTRATION. The trail will be officially registered in the Sardinia Trail Network (RES) registry after the replacement of the existing trail signs (belonging to the old letter-based classification system) has been completed. By the end of 2022, the trail signs in the entire area of North Limbara were replaced, and only the large information panels (140x100 cm) are yet to be installed.

Tips and recommendations for enjoying the trail

Hiking time and the elevation profile change in the two directions of travel: ascending to Valliciola the absolute elevation gain is 359 m, with a total ascent of 424 m. On the other hand, the way back from Valliciola is entirely downhill, except for a few short uphill stretches. Consequently, hiking time is also shorter (the way back takes about 10 minutes less).

Some parts of the route are not covered by cell service; so it is best not to venture out alone and to be accompanied by experienced people.

In severe weather, in light of the area’s terrain these trails can be exposed to significant hydrogeological hazards. Vegetation regrowth might obscure the path in some places: it is best to have detailed maps and/or a carefully calculated GPS route before setting off on your hike.

Roadbook

After parking your car in the rest area next to the entrance to the Curadoreddu forest and after walking a few metres, you will find on the left (with your back to the SS 392) signs for trail 401 (formerly “trail A”), which begins with a forest track through the pine wood, leading to ORGANICA, a museum of environment-themed visual arts in the Limbara Park. The CEDAP (Centro per la Documentazione sull’Ambiente e sul Paesaggio, Centre for Environmental and Landscape Documentation) exhibition space (closed during the winter months) is a small gem of contemporary architecture designed by architect Menicucci, not far from the Rio Pisciaroni natural pools.
