The pathway
Roadbook
You start near the main road, on the northern outskirts of the charming village of Mara. The path immediately begins a steep ascent, winding through pastures bordered by dry-stone walls. The area's volcanic landscape is striking: on the left, you can admire the rounded crater of Monte Larenta, while the surrounding hills tell a story of tumultuous geological events.
You reach the top of the climb and begin a gradual descent. On the left, you can see the sharp ridge where the ruins of Bonvehì Castle stand. The castle was abandoned after a bloody siege at the end of the Giudicato era.
The road reaches a clear intersection where you turn right. In the direction of travel, you can make out the long ridge of Monte Traessu, a habitual destination for griffons and a treasure trove of biodiversity.
After another crossroads, you continue uphill and soon reach the Church of Bonu Ighinu. The beautiful baroque building is located in an extraordinary setting, in a panoramic position, and is surrounded by highly significant archaeological sites. Not far away are the caves that gave their name to an important Early Neolithic Culture in Sardinia.
