In addition to the beauty of the Carignano vines, today's route is characterised by important archaeological points of interest (Menhir of Su Terrazzu, necropolis of Pani Loriga, Grotta del Tesoro) and traces of mining activity (Su Benatzu mine), but above all by underground karstic phenomena (Is Zuddas Caves).

The route proceeds along comfortable and easy roads.

The first part of the route out of Santadi develops along asphalted urban and peri-urban roads, so pay attention to vehicular traffic.

Once you reach the village of Is Pireddas, you must cross the SP 293 road, therefore pay close attention to vehicular traffic.

Once you reach Terrazzu, you travel along asphalted roads with vehicular traffic in some sections; once again, make sure to pay attention.

After Terrazzu, you have to proceed towards Pani Loriga; if you want to visit the archaeological site, you need to cross once again the SP 293 two times to visit the site and come back. When crossing, pay attention to vehicular traffic on the provincial road.

Before arriving in Su Benatzu and just before Is Zuddas, you have to take a stretch of the SP 70 road; watch out for vehicular traffic.

Il percorso è caratterizzato, oltre alla bellezza dei vitigni del Carignano, da importanti punti di interesse archeologico come i  Menhir di Su Terrazzu, la necropoli di Pani Loriga e la  Grotta del Tesoro. 

Importanti sono su questo territorio anche le testimonianze dell’attività estrattiva come la miniera di Su Benatzu e di importanti  fenomeni carsici sotterranei  come le grotte di Is Zuddas.

This stage will lead you to barite quarries and several archaeological sites (Domus de janas of Su Cungiau de Tuttui, Nuraghi Moddizzi, Murrecci and Corongius Longus).

Lush vegetation with beautiful juniper trees covers the hills above the urban centre of Masainas.

You will have occasional glimpses of the landscape, where you can admire the sea in the distance.

The uphill slope that must be climbed at the start of the route to come up from the Is Zuddas caves (102 m above sea level) and reach the pass of Monte Moddizzi (374 m above sea level) is quite challenging.

Safety and useful tips

Upon leaving Is Zuddas, follow the SP 70 road for about 500 m to arrive in Su Benatzu. Pay attention to vehicular traffic and to the crossing in order to reach the correct side of the road.

Afterwards, you can proceed quite easily along the signed dirt roads that characterise the itinerary. However, it must be said that the stage is very long, therefore it is necessary to prepare adequately.

As you arrive in Piscinas, you will walk through the main street of the village, which is in fact the SS 293 road, therefore pay attention to urban traffic.

Also when you reach Giba, you will find the same situation as before, as you have to cross part of the town on the main road which is still the SS 293. Therefore, pay attention to urban traffic and any crossings.

Upon arriving in Masainas, just before reaching the memorial stone, you have to cross the southern outskirts of the village while passing through Via Roma, which is none other than the urban route of the SS 195; therefore make sure to pay attention when crossing and passing along the streets of the village.

Questa tappa è caratterizzata dalle cave di barite e dai  numerosi siti archeologici che si trovano nel territorio come la domus de janas di Su Cungiau de Tuttui e i nuraghi di Moddizzi, Murrecci e Corongius Longus.

Un lussureggiante manto vegetale con bellissimi esemplari di ginepro copre i rilievi che sovrastano il centro urbano di Masainas e a tratti si aprono squarci di paesaggio, dove la vista arriva fino al mare.

Si tratta di una tappa abbastanza impegnativa considerato lo strappo in salita da affrontare all’inizio del percorso per risalire dalle grotte Is Zuddas (102 m/slm) alla sella del Monte Moddizzi (374 m/slm)

This is one of the new stages of the Trail that goes from the plains of Lower Sulcis to the southern end of the south-western coast of Sardinia.

Fish ponds, white dunes and the beautiful Porto Pino beach add beauty to an itinerary in which there is no shortage of traces of the mines and evidence of the ancient history of this strip of Sardinia, with the Nuraghe Arresi dominating the town of Sant'Anna Arresi.

As you leave Masainas, proceed towards Is Domus (hamlet of Sant'Anna Arresi), where you have to walk along some asphalted roads with limited traffic. In any case, pay attention to the presence of vehicular traffic.

Upon arriving in Sant'Anna Arresi, you need to cross a series of urban roads, so you must pay attention to traffic and crossings. In particular, when you leave Sant'Anna Arresi, you have to walk along a stretch of the SP 73 road until you reach the cemetery. Also in this case, make sure to pay attention to vehicular traffic.

Just before arriving in the hamlet of Is Cinus, you must cross once again the SP 73, therefore pay close attention to the crossing, which, in this stretch, sees high-speed vehicle transit.

Questa tappa si sviluppa su un percorso che dalla pianura del Basso Sulcis porta fino all’estremità meridionale della costa sud-occidentale della Sardegna.

Gli stagni pescosi, le dune bianche e la meravigliosa spiaggia di Porto Pino aggiungono bellezza al Cammino nel quale non mancano nel tratto iniziale le tracce delle miniere e le testimonianze della storia antica di questo lembo di Sardegna come testimonia il Nuraghe Arresi che domina il centro abitato di Sant’Anna Arresi.

You will walk along the cliffs of Porto Pinetto and Portu Su Trigu while admiring once again the beautiful landscape with a constant view of the gulf of Palmas to the west.

The large expanses of Vermentino and Carignano vines are also characteristic of the first part of the route, until you enter the dune complex behind the Sa Salina and the Porto Botte beaches, from which you reach the plain with countryside landscapes that brings you to Tratalias.

It is a demanding stage due to its length, but very easy to walk.

Safety and useful tips

The route from Candiani does not present any particular difficulties until you get to the crossing of Via Nora, which is the asphalted road that goes from Is Solinas to the coast, where you have to cross the road and pay attention to vehicular traffic.

After passing Porto Botte, you have to proceed along an asphalted road with little traffic, which will take you to the Nuraghe Villarios, where shortly afterwards you have to cross the junction between SP 195 and SP 73. All these roads are subject to heavy vehicular traffic, so it is advisable to pay close attention to the various crossings along the route.

Afterwards, the route proceeds to Tratalias along dirt country roads and a cycle track (in Tratalias) which, despite being crossed by cars and vehicles, are not that problematic.

The stage is very long, so it is necessary to be adequately prepared.

La tappa comincia dalle scogliere di Porto Pinetto e Portu Su Trigu dalle quali si possono ammirare paesaggi stupendi con vista verso occidente sul golfo di Palmas.

La prima parte del percorso è anche caratterizzato dalle grandi distese di vitigni di vermentino e carignano;  successivamente ci si addentra nel complesso dunale retrostante alla spiaggia di Sa Salina e poi nella spiaggia di Porto Botte dalla quale attraversando una pianura che offre i tipici paesaggi di campagna si giunge fino a Tratalias.

E’ una tappa impegnativa per la sua lunghezza ma molto agevole da percorrere.

This is an easy stage that leaves time to visit the various ancient churches present in the area: from the medieval Santa Maria di Monserrato, to the Byzantine Santa Maria di Palmas, to the early Christian Basilica of Sant'Antioco.

You should keep a slow pace to admire the naturalistic beauty of the birdlife present in the wet area of the Sant'Antioco saltworks: a fascinating itinerary that leads you back to the south-western coast of Sardinia.

Safety and useful tips

The route from the ancient village of Tratalias proceeds along a comfortable and easy dirt road. As you go past the small church of Palmas you have to cross the SS 195 road and the Rio Palmas.

Depending on the weather and on the flood conditions of the River, it is possible to pass under the SS 195. (Please Note: The River can flood even without adverse weather conditions, in fact it is the natural outlet of the dam of the Lake of Monte Prama; therefore the river can flood even when the dam locks are opened).

In case the SS 195 underpass over the bed of the Rio Palmas is impassable due to the water flow, you will have to cross the SS 195. Therefore, make sure to pay close attention to the presence of vehicular traffic.

Once in the vicinity of Sant'Antioco, it is necessary to proceed by crossing the SS 126 road and taking the footbridge that connects the Island of Sant'Antioco to Sardinia. Pay attention when crossing the state highway due to the heavy traffic.

At the end of the stage, you have to pass through the streets of Sant'Antioco, therefore it is necessary to pay attention to the urban traffic.
