The park is a natural oasis of about 55 hectares, established in 1994 by the Municipality of Ortueri with the aim of safeguarding the Sardinian donkey breed — a species that was nearing extinction due to agricultural mechanization and the decline of traditional uses.
Today, the park is home to about 60 Sardinian donkeys, which live in a semi-wild state within a woodland environment (holm oaks, cork oaks, and pines) rich in natural springs. Educational activities, guided tours, and nature-based tourism are currently being developed within the park. The Municipality is also working to introduce donkey-assisted therapy (onotherapy) — a therapeutic practice that uses interaction with donkeys for psychophysical well-being.
