How to best care for your trekking shoes

Trekking shoes are our primary support and most important companion on our hikes. For this reason, it is advisable not to skimp on either money for their purchase – choosing the model most suitable for the difficulties and terrain you will face – nor, above all, the time necessary to take care of your shoes.
Monitoring the condition of the footwear
Before each outing, it is advisable to check the condition of the shoes, both inside and out, especially after long periods of disuse. In the case of older shoes, it is appropriate to test them. Should the state of preservation not be convincing, it is recommended to bring a spare pair of shoes to prevent unpleasant inconveniences during the hike. If you wish to proceed with resoling, it is advisable not to postpone the work for too long. Shoes in critical condition will be more difficult to resole, and will probably guarantee an unsatisfactory result.
Effective maintenance for the correct functionality of trekking shoes.
Cleaning and treating the material are the foundation for prolonging the lifespan of the shoes.
Regarding external cleaning, it is recommended to avoid the most aggressive products, resorting to a soft brush and lukewarm water. If used in an arid or sandy environment, it is necessary to remove dust with a brush or compressed air. It is essential to apply proper cleaning to the sole, eyelets, and hooks as well. When the leather is still damp, the use of a waterproofing spray is recommended, which improves the shoe's performance and extends its lifespan.
The first step for effective internal cleaning is the removal of the inner insole, followed by washing and drying. Once the insole is removed, it will be easy to handle it for proper brushing, taking care not to damage the seams.
Once brushed, to prevent damage during drying, the shoes should be placed in an environment with average temperatures, away from sunlight and heat sources, and with laces that prevent the appearance of creases.
Finally, for optimal storage, it is advisable to insert a shoe tree or, generally, paper inside so that the shoe can maintain its shape.
